Global VC Funding for Blockchain Firms Surged to Record $25B in 2021: CB Insights

Venture capital funding for blockchain startups reached $25.2 billion last year, up 713% from $3.1 billion in 2020, according to CB Insights’ “2021 State of Blockchain” report.

In Q4 2021, global financing reached more than $9 billion, up from more than $7 billion in the previous quarter, added market intelligence.

Blockchain start-up financing represented 4% of global VC, compared to 1% in 2020. Cb insights sees this percentage increase again in 2022 taking into account the growth of crypto startups, non-figurable tokens (nft) and web 3.

Venture capital financing for NFT companies surged to $4.8 billion in 2021, compared to only $37 million in 2020. In addition, the number of challenge transactions executed on a global scale reached 240, almost double the number in 2020 (124).

Overall, more than 1,000 block chain transactions were completed in 2021, exceeding the level of 662 in 2020. According to CB Insights, 79 per cent of these 2021 transactions were early growth investments.

Coinbase Ventures was the first blockchain investor in 2021, investing in 68 enterprises, followed by AU21 Capital in China with 51 and Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) with 48.

U.S. -based blockchain financing totalled $14.1 billion in 2021, compared to $1.7 billion in 2020. Businesses in the New York Metropolitan Area paved the way with $6.5 billion in financing, followed by Silicon Valley with $3.9 billion.
