cardano’s chief, charles hoskinson, has grand plans in 2022 for dapps, for which no expense will be spared.

cardano chief charles hoskinson laid out his roadmap for cardano in 2022 in a recent educational vlog on youtube. The main objective of hoskinson was to develop an expanded utxo smart contract template for smart contracts on cardano. Cardano backed smart deals from the hard fork. hoskinson draws a distinction between the way bitcoin smart contracts are written, how ethereum virtual machine(evm) smart contracts are written, and how cardano to occupy a middle ground.

Expandable UTXO model in development.

hoskinson elaborates on bitcoin’s utxo system. Smart contracts are written in a language called "functional". Smart contracts contain features that run on utxo inputs to give utxo outputs. The functions contain terms and conditions defined by the language in terms of their expressiveness. The expressivity of a language is the magnitude of an idea that can be represented and communicated in that language.

As one moves along the spectrum from the least expressive to the most expressive, one finds programming environments such as the Java virtual machine on which Minecraft turns to the most expressive end. the evm falls somewhere close to being fully expressive but has limits on its expressiveness due to security reasons.

Cardano seeks to find common ground between the utxo bitcoin intelligent contract template and the evm template and create an expanded utxo (eutxo) template. The reason behind this is simple: are there features that the evm is using that are not necessary for an application, which is paid by the users of the event? If this is the case, one can remove the unnecessary features of evm while maintaining the functional paradigm of Bitcoin. That is what Cardano's new model aims for.

most of the coding for cardano is done using the programming language haskell. The company promotes functional languages because of their resistance to ambiguity and human error compared to other languages, and because they are easier to verify mathematically.

eutxo must be done by october, says hoskinson

hoskinson wants much of the development work on the new eutxo model to be done by october, and is willing to spare no expense. There are three that need to be carefully monitored in 2022, one in February, one in June and one in October. The company behind cardano, global entry output, has 100 engineers dedicated to the construction of different parts of the new software stack and has enrolled 15 external companies to provide code. Hoskinson believes that most of the scientific work is already done, and now all that remains to do is code.
