Luke dashjr, a core developer of Bitcoin that claims to be the longest contributor to the blockbuster cryptocurrency, was hacked earlier this week and lost millions of Bitcoin dollars.

Lost basically all of his Bitcoin

Dashjr claimed that he had lost “basically all” of his Bitcoin (BTC) holdings in a hack that occurred on New Year’s Day. In a Twitter feed, Dashjr disclosed that he had traced some of the stolen funds to a portfolio address that received nearly 217 BTCs. At the time of writing, the stolen BTC was worth $3.6 million.

Bitcoin dev said the hack was the result of a key pgp (fairly good confidentiality) compromise, and said the attacker's IP address was traced to a colocrossing server. He could not explain how his cold wallets were drilled, but he noticed that he had accessed them for the last time in September.

Twitter users replied speculating that the hack may be connected to a security breach which dashjr tweeted on in November. Following the attack, dashjr called to colocrossing for allegedly "dropping the bullet on the abuse investigation last time" and promised to change server providers.

He also warned people not to use Bitcoin nodes, a Bitcoin portfolio signed with its PGP key now compromised. Dashjr has requested assistance from the FBI but has not yet received an answer.

Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao was among those who responded to Dashjr’s plight. CZ reassured him that he had asked his security team to monitor the situation. The head of BINANCE suggested freezing the stolen funds, if they find their way to binance.

I'm sorry you lost that much. Notified our security team for surveillance... We deal with these often, and have Law Enforcement (LE) relationships worldwide,”
