Ethan is an Internet biophysicist, sustainability existentialist, and plaintext evangelist.

He holds an HBSc in Physical Science and a MASc in Engineering Systems and Computing from the University of Guelph. With a background in cell biology, neuroscience, mathematics, machine learning, and distributed computing, his goal is to create tools that support the autonomous organization of humans into functional systems, just as molecules self-organize into life. Currently, he focuses primarily on blockchain technology to increase economic sovereignty in communities around the world.

Ethan is a co-founder of the Tendermint and Cosmos projects and remains active in their development. In addition to formal verification of Cosmos protocols, he is also CEO of Informal Systems, a company dedicated to verifiable distributed systems and organizations. He serves as Vice-President of the Interchain Foundation, a non-profit with a mission to research, develop, and promote open, decentralized networks like the Cosmos Network. Also, he runs CoinCulture CryptoConsulting, which offers in-depth courses on blockchain technology for both technical and non-technical audiences.

He also mentors at the University of Toronto’s Creative Destruction Lab, where he advises on the technical aspects of blockchains and other distributed systems.
